A novel polysaccharide isolated from Angelica sinensis, named APS−1d showed cytotoxic activity towards several cancer cell lines in vitro. However, the precise antitumor mechanisms of this compound are unknown. In this study, we investigated the pro−apoptotic effects of APS−1d in human cervical cancer HeLa cells both in vitro and in vivo, and further elucidated the mechanisms of this action. »

Atypical glandular cell (AGC) Papanicolaou (Pap) test interpretations are challenging. Most biopsy findings are benign, but AGC results may also reflect highly significant noninvasive neoplastic and malignant histologic outcomes. High−risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) test use with AGC Pap test results is evolving. »

There is continued interest in markers indicative of circulating melanoma cells. Nestin is a neuroepithelial intermediate filament protein that was found to be expressed in melanoma and in various cancer stem cells. »

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy generally is recommended for patients who have melanoma with a Breslow thickness >/=1 mm. Most patients with melanoma between 1 mm and 2 mm thick have tumor−negative SLNs and an excellent long−term prognosis. The objective of the current study was to evaluate prognostic factors in this subset of patients and determine whether all such patients require SLN biopsy. »

We report that melanoma cell lines expressing the interleukin-1 receptor exhibit 4- to 10-fold lower levels of mRNA of Microphtalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF-M) when treated with interleukin-1beta. This effect is NF-kappaB and JNK-dependent. MITF-M regulates the expression of melanocyte differentiation genes such as MLANA, tyrosinase and gp100, which encode antigens recognized on melanoma cells by autologous cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTL). »

Biomarkers play an important role in the diagnosis and prognostic classification of various cancers and can be useful in monitoring the patient's clinical course of disease and response to therapy. Generally, biomarkers are proteins and their expressions are associated with malignant disease. »

Glyoxalase I [lactoylglutathione lyase (EC 4.4.1.5) encoded by GLO1] is a ubiquitous cellular defense enzyme involved in the detoxification of methylglyoxal, a cytotoxic byproduct of glycolysis. Accumulative evidence suggests an important role of GLO1 expression in protection against methylglyoxal−dependent protein adduction and cellular damage associated with diabetes, cancer, and chronological aging. »

The aim of this study was the detection of circulating tumor cells (CTC) in three tumor types of epithelial origin. »

It has been established that the removal of adenomatous colon polyps drastically reduces the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC), but polypectomy is not without risk. The aim was to determine the correlation between the results of an optical biopsy system and the histopathology report of the physical biopsy specimens of the same polyps removed at colonoscopy. »
