Upregulation of glycolysis has been demonstrated in multiple tumor types. Glucose deprivation results in diminished intracellular ATP; this is counteracted by AMPK activation during energy deficiency to restore ATP levels. We sought to determine whether glucose deprivation could induce cytotoxicity in ovarian cancer cells through activation of AMPK, and whether AMPK activators could mimic glucose deprivation induced cytotoxicity. »

GLUT-1 is involved at various steps in the processes of tumor progression. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between GLUT-1 expression and tumor proliferation and angiogenesis in epithelial ovarian carcinoma. »

Although estrogens have been long implicated in the prostate carcinogenesis, direct evidence showing their carcinogenicity on prostatic epithelial cells has not yet been clearly demonstrated. In this study, we treated an immortalized, non-transformed and androgen-responsive rat prostatic epithelial cell line NRP-152 with 17β-estradiol (E2) at concentrations 1-3 microM for period 2-6 weeks. »

Coffee contains many biologically active compounds, including caffeine and phenolic acids, that have potent antioxidant activity and can affect glucose metabolism and sex hormone levels. Because of these biological activities, coffee may be associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer. »

We determined the association between statin use and prostate cancer in men who underwent prostate biopsy. »

Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-AKT signaling is a well-characterized pathway involved in the control of cell proliferation, apoptosis and oncogenesis. LY294002 is a commonly used pharmacologic inhibitor which acts at the ATP-binding site of the PI3K enzyme, thus selectively inhibiting the PI3K-AKT nexus. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether PI3K inhibited by LY294002 had an effect on human bladder cancer cells. »

Antiangiogenesis has become a promising pillar in modern cancer therapy. This study investigates the antiangiogenic effects of the PEGylated Adnectin™, CT-322, in a murine Colo-205 xenograft tumor model. CT-322 specifically binds to and blocks vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR-2). »

Recently, we have shown that the new G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor GPR30 plays an important role in the development of tamoxifen resistance in vitro. This study was undertaken to evaluate the correlation between GPR30 and tamoxifen resistance in breast cancer patients. »

Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) is a cellular DNA-receptor, which is widely expressed in cancer. Synthetic TLR9-ligands induce cancer cell invasion in vitro, but the role of TLR9 in cancer pathophysiology remains unclear. Increased TLR9 expression has been, however, detected in estrogen receptor negative (ER-) breast cancers. In this study, we investigated the effects of ERα expression and sex steroid hormones on TLR9 expression in human ER+ (MCF-7, T47-D) and ER- (MDA-MB-231) breast cancer cell lines in vitro. »

Breast cancer has a long natural history. Established and emerging biologic markers address overall risk but not necessarily timing of recurrence. 346 adjuvant naïve breast cancer cases from Guy's Hospital with 23 years minimum follow-up and archival blocks were recut and reassessed for hormone-receptors (HR), HER2-receptor and grade. »
