The sphingolipid ceramide is known to play a central role in chemo- and radiation-induced cell death. Acid ceramidase (AC) hydrolyzes ceramide, and thus reduces intracellular levels of this proapoptotic lipid. The role of AC as a putative anticancer target is supported by reports of upregulation in prostate cancer and in some breast tumors. »

Trastuzumab improves survival in the adjuvant treatment of HER-positive breast cancer, although combined therapy with anthracycline-based regimens has been associated with cardiac toxicity. We wanted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new nonanthracycline regimen with trastuzumab. »

We have previously demonstrated that chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycans (CS-GAGs) on breast cancer cells function as P-selectin ligands. This study was performed to identify the carrier proteoglycan (PG) and the sulfotransferase gene involved in synthesis of the surface P-selectin-reactive CS-GAGs in human breast cancer cells with high metastatic capacity, as well as to determine a direct role for CS-GAGs in metastatic spread. »

Epirubicin is a common adjuvant treatment for breast cancer. It is mainly eliminated after glucuronidation through uridine diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase 2B7 (UGT2B7). The present study aimed to describe the impact of the UGT2B7His268Tyr polymorphism on invasive disease-free survival in breast cancer patients after epirubicin treatment. »

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death, and there is an urgent need for new biomarkers and therapeutic targets. The Pgrmc1 (progesterone receptor membrane component 1) protein is up-regulated in multiple types of cancer, and Pgrmc1 is required for tumor cell proliferation, motility and tumor formation in vivo. »

This open label, single arm phase II study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the addition of cetuximab to first line chemotherapy with carboplatin and weekly docetaxel in patients with advanced non small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). From February 2007 to December 2008 74 patients with NSCLC (stage IIIB and IV), ECOG PS ≤2 and no prior systemic chemotherapy were enrolled and treated with carboplatin (area under the curve=5 on day 1) and docetaxel (35mg/m(2) on days 1, 8, and 15). »

We examined the associations between the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor polymorphism (rs1051730) on chromosome 15q25 marking the gene cluster CHRNA3-CHRNB4-CHRNA5, smoking behavior, and tobacco-related cancer and lung and cardiovascular diseases in the general population. »

The aim of this study was to investigate the patterns of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) overexpression, EGFR gene amplification, and the presence of activating mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain of this gene in squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas/adenosquamous carcinomas of the uterine cervix. »

Experimental studies have shown that statins have potential protective effects against cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of statins was associated with gastric cancer risk. »

To report serial 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) tumor response following CyberKnife radiosurgery for stage IA non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). »
