IFN-γ promotes tumoral immune surveillance, but its involvement in controlling metastases is less clear. Using a mouse model of pulmonary metastases, we show that local IFN-γ treatment inhibits formation of metastases through its regulation of IRF-1 in tumor cells. IRF-1 is an IFN-γ-induced transcription factor pivotal in the regulation of infection and inflammation. IRF-1 blockade abolished the inhibitory effect of IFN-γ on tumor metastases, whereas ectopic expression of IRF-1 phenocopied the inhibitory effects of IFN-γ. »

Chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 5 (CHD5) is a potent tumor suppressor that serves as a master regulator of a tumor-suppressive network. Examination of the role played by CHD5 in a wide range of human cancers is warranted. In this study, we focused on the epigenetic modification and tumor-suppressive role of CHD5 in lung cancer. Convergent evidence implicates the TERE1 protein in human bladder tumor progression and lipid metabolism. Previously, reduced TERE1 expression was found in invasive urologic cancers and inhibited cell growth upon re-expression. A role in lipid metabolism was suggested by TERE1 binding to APOE, a cholesterol carrier, and to TBL2, a candidate protein in triglyceride disorders. »

Recent studies have shown that thymosin β4 (TB-4) is highly related with tumor metastasis and angiogenesis. In addition, TB-4 induced the expression of VEGF in melanoma cells. We investigated the expression patterns of TB-4 and related angiogenic proteins, VEGF, and HIF-1α, at various stages of cervical cancers and also identified the expression pattern of these proteins in metastatic cervical cancers. »
