Tumor infiltration with effector CD8(+) T cells (T(eff)) predicts longer recurrence-free survival in many types of human cancer, illustrating the broad significance of T(eff) for effective immunosurveillance. Colorectal tumors with reduced accumulation of T(eff) express low levels of T(eff)-attracting chemokines such as CXCL10/IP10 and CCL5/RANTES. We recently reported that both microRNA (miR)-143 and -145 are downregulated in human bladder cancer T24 cells and that miR-143 targets ERK5. In this study, we assessed the anti-tumor effects of combination treatment with miR-143 and -145 on bladder cancer cell lines T24, SNK57, and NKB1, in which the expression levels of miR-143 and -145 are downregulated. The ectopic expression of both miR-143 and -145 led to a significantly synergistic growth inhibition of T24 and NKB1 cells, but not that of SNK57 cells with the levels of miR-143 and -145 higher than those in T24 and NKB1 cells. »

The prognosis of patients with metastatic uveal melanoma is poor and there are limited therapeutic options. C-kit is expressed in the majority of patients with metastatic uveal melanoma. In this pilot trial, we examined the toxicity and efficacy of sunitinib malate, a multitarget tyrosine kinase inhibitor, in patients with metastatic uveal melanoma. Twenty patients with metastatic uveal melanoma expressing c-kit, 17 of whom failed previous treatments, were included in this study. »

High-grade gliomas are some of the most lethal forms of human cancer, and new clinical biomarkers and therapeutic targets are highly needed. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a group of short noncoding RNAs, hold great potential as new biomarkers and targets as they are commonly deregulated in a variety of diseases including gliomas. MicroRNA-21 (miR-21) is the most consistently overexpressed miRNA in several cancers including gliomas and is therefore very promising as a useful clinical biomarker and therapeutic target. »

Aspirin has been widely reported to reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer. Recently, a survival benefit after diagnosis has also been suggested. Data regarding such a benefit are to date contradictory. This study examines the effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use on mortality in colorectal cancer in a larger patient cohort than previously to further clarify this effect, especially in terms of exposure timing and dosing. »
