Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) patients with localized residual disease and/or distant metastases may survive for several years or rapidly progress and die of their disease. Thus, highly reliable prognostic factors are needed for an early distinction between high-risk patients who need to be treated and low-risk patients who warrant a watch-and-wait approach. »

Prediction of recurrence remains a challenge in histopathological benign/grade I tumors. Osteopontin (OPN) plays important roles in tumorigenesis, invasion, and metastasis of several human cancers. In this study, we investigated OPN protein expression by evaluating the differences between recurrent and non-recurrent histologically benign meningiomas. »

The current management of primary CNS tumors involves a multimodal approach, incorporating cytoreductive techniques including resection, radiotherapy, and antiproliferative chemotherapeutic agents. Despite these attempts, the majority of patients with a diagnosis of a high-grade glioma have a dismal prognosis, with the leading cause of treatment failure and tumor recurrence attributable to local invasion of adjacent brain parenchyma. The current study examines the capacity of glioma tumor cells to undergo neurite outgrowth and local migration, specifically focusing on the role of the cadherin cell adhesion system. »

Recently, the gene encoding the human cytosolic NADPH-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH1) was reported frequently mutated in gliomas. Rare mutations were also found in the sequence of the mitochondrial isoform IDH2. »

Docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-flurouracil (DCF) administered every 3 weeks produces a high rate of treatment-related adverse events. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of a weekly formulation of DCF. »

Hypoxia is recognized as an important factor contributing to cancer development and drug resistance. Cetuximab, a chimeric monoclonal antibody to EGFR, is known to inhibit HIF-1 alpha expression levels and to enhance the cytotoxicity of chemotherapeutic agents. »

In gastric cancer, several tumor suppressor and tumor-related genes are silenced by aberrant methylation. Previously, we demonstrated that BCL2L10, which belongs to the pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family, was transcriptionally repressed by promoter hypermethylation and that its overexpression caused apoptosis and growth inhibition of gastric cancer cells. »

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection on the sonic Hedgehog (Shh) signaling in gastric cancer. »

Nitric oxide (NO) is known to be critically involved in breast carcinogenesis. Genetic polymorphisms of the gene encoding for endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), the enzyme catalyzing the production of the NO, are known to predispose to malignant disease. »

The final signal for triggering the formation of lamellipodia that initiate directional migration of mammalian cells is binding of the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WASP)/WASP family verproline-homologous protein 2 (WAVE2) to the actin-related protein 2 and 3 (Arp2/3) complex. »
