Although carbon ion therapy facilities are expensive, the biological effects of carbon ion beam treatment may be better against cancer (and cancer stem cells) than the effects of a photon beam. To investigate whether a carbon ion beam may have a biological advantage over X-rays by targeting cancer stem-like cells, human colon cancer cells were used in vitro and in vivo. »

A novel antibody-drug conjugate (trastuzumab-DM1, T-DM1) is currently in clinical trials for patients with trastuzumab resistant HER2-positive breast cancer. Since no clinical data is available from gastric cancer, we studied T-DM1 on HER2-positive human gastric cancer cells and xenograft tumors. »

The aim of the current study was to catalog genomic and epigenomic abnormalities in newly diagnosed glioblastoma patients and determine the correlation among clinical, genetic, and epigenetic profiles and clinical outcome. »

Hypericin is a potent inhibitor of glioma growth in vitro. To examine whether synthetic oral hypericin can be tolerated by patients with recurrent malignant gliomas (anaplastic astrocytoma and glioblastoma) and to investigate its efficacy against these tumors, the authors undertook an open-label, sequential dose escalation/de-escalation tolerance study. »

MicroRNA (miRNA) expression profiling studies revealed a number of miRNAs dysregulated in the malignant brain tumor, glioblastoma. Molecular functions of these miRNAs in gliomagenesis are mainly unknown. We show that inhibition of miR-10b, a miRNA not expressed in human brain and strongly up-regulated in both low-grade and high-grade gliomas, reduces glioma cell growth by cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. »

Several sirtuin family members (SIRT1-7), which are evolutionarily conserved NAD-dependent deacetylases, play an important role in carcinogenesis. However, their role in oral cancer has not yet been investigated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate whether sirtuins play a role in oral cancer carcinogenesis. »

This study investigates the association between polymorphism in the E-cadherin/CDH1 promoter region and the risk and progression of oral cancer. »

We investigated whether genetic polymorphisms of the DNA repair gene NBN are associated with head and neck cancer risk. »

Low-level laser therapy has been used to reduce complications of head and neck cancer treatment. The aim was to assess the impact of laser in the quality of life (QOL) of patients receiving radiotherapy. »

There is increasing use of multiple molecular markers to predict prognosis in human cancer. Our aim was to examine the prognostic significance of cyclin D1 and retinoblastoma (pRb) expression in association with human papillomavirus (HPV) status in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. »
